Notary Applications Now Filed Online, Saving Time, Taxpayer Money

HARRISBURG, Pa., June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Nearly 60 percent of Pennsylvanians applying to become notaries public in May did so online; just eight months after the Department of State announced the online application process.
"Governor Corbett has directed all agencies to find efficiencies in the way we serve the public, and moving the notary application process online can save taxpayers up to $80,000 a year," said Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele. "This electronic process also dramatically cuts the time it takes the Department of State to process notary applications from as long as four weeks to as little as two days."
This system allows the applicant to complete and submit the application as well as obtain the legally required endorsement from the applicant's state senator electronically. All 50 senators are participating in the online application system.
Processing notary applications quickly is important for individuals and businesses.
"Notaries public in Pennsylvania have the power to administer oaths and affirmations, certify copies, and take depositions, affidavits, and verifications," Aichele said. "Given today's increased threat of identity theft and other security concerns, notaries public are playing a key role in deterring document fraud, and helping business and legal transactions flow smoothly."
To access online applications, go to . Under "Our most frequently requested services,'' click on "Apply Online to Become a Notary Public."
The Department of State processes an average of 23,000 notary applications annually. It will continue to accept paper applications for the time being to accommodate applicants without Internet access.
